Netflix Announces Its First Series Using Generative AI

Artificial intelligence technologies are now being used in film and television series productions. These technologies are becoming a significant alternative, especially for scenes requiring visual effects. Netflix has become one of the companies taking steps in this area.

Netflix has brought AI technology to series production. The company announced that some scenes in the Argentine science fiction series “The Eternaut” were entirely created with generative artificial intelligence.

According to a statement by Netflix, a building collapse scene set in Buenos Aires in the series was prepared entirely using AI technology. The company stated that this scene was completed 10 times faster than it would have been with traditional visual effects tools.

AI Paves the Way for Visual Effects in Low-Budget Productions

It was also noted that this method resulted in significant cost savings in production. Netflix stated that the use of this technology provides an advantage for productions with more limited budgets, like “The Eternaut.” Company CEO Ted Sarandos said that both the production team and the viewers were satisfied with the results. It was also reported that this AI-generated scene was directly used in the final version of the series.

Netflix has previously utilized artificial intelligence in various productions and continues to prefer this technology, especially in the field of visual effects. However, it’s known that AI is a controversial topic in the world of cinema and television. The use of artificial intelligence was also an important agenda item during the writer and actor strikes in 2023.

The fact that AI speeds up visual effects processes and reduces costs indicates that this technology will start to be used not only for large-budget films but also for smaller productions.
